What is Finnair Plus?

Finnair Plus is Finnair's frequent flyer program. It is program that everyone can join and more you fly more benefits you can get. You earn points on flights with Finnair and with its Oneworld Alliance partners, and you can earn points also with Finnair other partners example. hotel chains, car rental companies etc.

You can two different kind of points - tier points and award points. By collecting tier points you can climb up to higher level in Finnair Plus tiers. Award points you can use to book an award tickets, upgrade yourself to higher class and use them in Finnair Plus shop.

Finnair Plus Tiers

Finnair Plus has five different tiers. Lowest tier is Finnair Plus Basic and highest tier is Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo. All the levels have equivalent level within Oneworld Alliance. However, with Oneworld Alliance Finnair Plus Platinum and Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo have same tier level - Oneworld Emerald.

Finnair plus has also two lifetime tier levels - Finnair Plus Gold Lifetime and Finnair Plus Platinum Lifetime.

Finnair Plus Tier Benefits

When you climbing up in higher tier with Finnair Plus, you will receive more tier benefits. These benefits can be split into four categories - baggage, airport services, flight and membership.

Finnair Plus Silver

To reach Finnair Plus Silver you need 30 000 tier points or 20 flights. (number of flights will be removed once new changes will take place in beginning of 2024)

Finnair Plus Silver is Finnair's first tier where you are actually receiving benefits. I have listed all the benefits below.

Baggage

When traveling with economy superlight ticket you can get one complimentary carry-on bag. If flying with economy superlight in short-haul flight or economy light ticket in long haul you can buy checked bag with 50% discount

Airport services

Finnair Plus Silver members are also entitled to use priority check-in with all the Finnair flights. When flying with Finnair's Oneworld partner airlines, you can use business class check-in.

Finnair Plus Silver members can also use priority security when it is available.

Flight

You can buy seat in advance and get 50% discount.

Membership

Finnair Plus Silver members receive 10% more Finnair Plus points (both award and tier) when flying with Finnair, American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia flights.

Finnair Plus Gold

To reach Finnair Plus Gold you need 80 000 tier points or 46 flights. (number of flights will be removed once new changes will take place in beginning of 2024)

Finnairs Plus Gold is third highest tier, and it is equivalent to Oneworld Sapphire, which is second highest tier within Oneworld Alliance. As Finnair Plus Gold member you will receive good benefits. Example. you can use lounge whenever flying with Finnair or one of the Oneworld Alliance partners.

You will also receive four short-haul travel class upgrades that be used flights within Europe or can be changed to be one upgrade voucher for long-hauls. Example you upgrade yourself from economy to business class.

Finnair Plus Gold members are also entitled to use priority check-in with all the Finnair flights. When flying with Finnair's Oneworld partner airlines, you can use business class check-in.

Finnair Plus Gold members can also use priority security when it is available.

Finnair Plus Gold members can also use business class lounge when flying with Finnair or one of the Oneworld Alliance partners. You can also bring one guest with you, who is flying on the same flight with you.

Flight

You can book your seat for free when flying with Finnair. This also includes comfort seats, but not extra legroom seats.

On long-haul flights you will receive 60minutes complimentary internet access and on short-haul flights you will receive 30min complimentary internet access.

Travel Class Upgrade

Finnair Plus Gold members receive four one-way travel class upgrades on short-haul flights. These can be exchanged for one long-haul flight upgrade or you can use them two-for-one award ticket. With two-for-one award ticket you are only paying award one points for one person meaning that one person will travel for "free".

Upgrade vouchers can be only used on flights operated and marketed by Finnair.

Membership

Finnair Plus Gold members receive 15% more Finnair Plus points (both award and tier) when flying with Finnair, American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia flights.

Finnair Plus Gold members also have their own customer service telephone number.

Finnair Plus Platinum

To reach Finnair Plus Platinum you need 150 000 tier points or 76 flights. (number of flights will be removed once new changes will take place in beginning of 2024)

Finnair Plus Platinum is second highest tier, and it is equivalent to Oneworld Emerald, which is highest tier within Oneworld Alliance. Benefits with Finnair Plus Platinum are one step better compared to Finnair Plus Gold.

If you are flying from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and you are flying outside of Schengen, you will have a possibility to use Finnair's Platinum Lounge. Compared to other lounges in Helsinki-Vantaa, in Platinum Lounge they have a A la carte restaurant.

You will also receive more upgrade vouchers compared to Finnair Plus Gold.

To reach Finnair Plus Platinum you need 450 000 tier points or 150 flights. Out of these 450 000 tier points, 350 000 needs be flown with Finnair. (number of flights will be removed once new changes will take place in beginning of 2024)

Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo is Finnair's highest tier. Within Oneworld Alliance it has same tier as Finnair Plus Platinum, which is Oneworld Emerald.

Before Covid-19 pandemic, Finnair offered transportation to your flight with BMW. However, this was not available all the time.

Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo and Finnair Plus Platinum are offering very similar benefits. Biggest difference is number of upgrade certificates.

Summary

Finnair Plus membership offer decent benefits for those who have reached at least Finnair Plus Gold membership. My favourite part of Finnair Plus program is upgrade vouchers. However, often there seems to be lack of upgrade possibilities and you often times need to add yourself to waitlist. My experience with waitlist is that upgrades does not go through and you have to call their customer service to get upgrade going through.

In coming parts of Finnair plus basics I will open up how to use Finnair Plus award points and how to upgrade yourself from economy to premium economy, or from economy to business class
