SAS has announced that its joining date to SkyTeam will be September 1st, 2024. This means that SAS will leave Star Alliance on August 31th, 2024. This doesn't come as earlier last year SAS announced that KLM-Air France will be one of their new owners.

Conclusion
This news were not a big surprise. I think SAS gave the leaving and joining date in well advance. As mentioned before this leave big gap from Star Alliance in the Scandinavia and it will be interesting to see how will Star Alliance and especially Lufthansa group will try to fill this gap for them.
For SkyTeam this is excellent as they will get a big foothold on Scandinavian market.
Of course for passangers biggest impact will be number of airlines they can book award tickets and I would expect to see SAS in a long run to change their routes to USA. Good example of this is that they have already launched route to Atlanta, which is Delta HUB.
